Nicole Shanahan Talks about California Avocados, Coffee, even Bananas.

Shanahan: We can grow wonderful avocados, coffee, even bananas in southern California, and the price difference is minimal.

Do we really need Mexican avocados? Are California avocados plentiful and even better than the produce that comes from Mexico? Will a tariff really affect the price of avocados? Might a quality California avocado cost about 25¢ more than its Mexican counterpart? Is the Mexico avocado cheaper because the workers are paid so much less in Mexico? What part do the Mexican cartels play in bringing Mexican avocados to American markets?

In an interesting interview, Nicole Shanahan tours her farm in southern California with Chef Andrew Grueland and talks about avocados, coffee beans and bananas, all of which “grow great in California,” and how the price might be affected by tariffs on Mexican produce.

We are a State (California) and a country “designed to self-produce and that we have been letting all of this economic opportunity go to waste, and it turns out that when you eat local, it’s healthier for you too,” Shanahan tells Grueland.

Nicole Shanahan was Robert F. Kennedy’s running mate, his Vice Presidential candidate, on their 3rd party race for the White House. She is a patent lawyer and philanthropist. She founded an AI-powered SaaS patent-management platform.  Andrew Gruel is the Founder of Slapfish Restaurant, which he has sold, and currently CEO and founder of American Gravy Restaurant Group, which includes Calico Fishhouse, Big Parm Pizza, Two Birds Chicken, Butterleaf, Lolo’s Tacos and 101 Burger.
