Trump is Formally Elected as the Next President
While the outcome was not in doubt, the Electoral College vote tally officially re-elected Mr. Trump as the next President.
Electoral College Votes 312 to 226 for Trump over Harris
Vice President Kamala Harris and Speaker Mike Johnson presided over the formal tally of the Electoral College vote on January 6, 2025, and while the outcome was not in doubt following Donald Trump’s massive victory on November 5, 2024, today’s vote totally officially re-elected Mr Trump as the next President. President Trump will be sworn-in and move back into the White House as the 47th President on January 20th. At his side, Senator J.D. Vance will be sworn-in as Vice President.
Vice President Harris, who loses her job in two weeks, appeared glum as she announced the tally. The Speaker, recently re-elected, had a smile.
Four years ago, on January 6, 2021, amid much dispute, Joe Biden was handed the Electoral Vote. Large protests at the Capitol by Republicans, Conservatives, and Trump supporters resulted in numerous arrests. Those arrested was called “J-6’ers,” and some are still in jail, sentenced and as yet unsentenced. Over 1,500 J-6’ers have already been charged, and the Department of Justice announced that it may charge another 200 defendants during Biden final 14 days in office.
This is despite the almost certain knowledge that most, if not all, J-6’ers will be pardoned on January 20th during or shortly after the Inaugural Ceremony.
This year’s Electoral College tally went smoothly, without protest and without incident, likely due to the commanding vote totals racked up by Mr. Trump in the campaign against Ms. Harris. Mr. Trump won the popular vote 77,303,573 votes to Ms. Harris’ 75,019,257 votes. Trump also led the Republicans to control of both Houses of Congress.
The states voting in the majority for Trump, shown in red, and those voting for Harris, shown in blue, tell the story of the election’s outcome. Most of the states voted predictably, but Mr. Trump’s victory was secured by his sweeping all seven swing states (Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina and Wisconsin), denying to Ms. Harris the Democrat’s fabled “Blue Wall.”
